Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station

The sleek, easy-to-use AirPort Extreme Base Station with simultaneous dual-band support is the perfect wireless access point for home, school or small business. It offers fast, 802.11n Wi-Fi access for Mac computers, PCs and Wi-Fi devices such as iPhone, iPod touch and Apple TV. Connect your DSL or cable modem to the AirPort Extreme Base Station, then quickly set it up with the easy-to-use AirPort Utility, which is available as download for both Mac OS X and Windows. In minutes, you and up to 50 others can use your Mac computers or PCs to surf the web, stream video, share photos and more without wires. For maximum range and compatibility, AirPort Extreme works simultaneously on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, allowing all the devices on the network to use the most efficient band automatically. It uses the latest 802.11n wireless technology, so you can enjoy up to five times the Wi-Fi performance and up to twice the range of 802.11g wireless networks. Set up a separate Wi-Fi network with a separate password for your visitors. Simply enable the guest networking feature, and your guests can use the Internet but can’t access other parts of your private network, such as your computers, printers and attached hard drives. Have several computers in your home or office but only one printer? No problem. Just connect a compatible printer to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme Base Station, and the printer instantly becomes available to all the computers (Mac and PC) on your wireless or wired network. You can share an external USB hard drive over your wireless and wired networks by simply connecting it to the USB port on your AirPort Extreme Base Station. Called AirPort Disk, this feature is perfect for sharing files and more. If you’re a MobileMe member using a Mac with Mac OS X Leopard or Snow Leopard, you can even access the files on the drive over the Internet. Rest easy AirPort Extreme takes strong measures to prevent unauthorised intrusion into your wireless network. It offers a built-in firewall and supports industry-standard encryption technologies including WPA/WPA2 and 128-bit WEP. Yet it’s still easy for authorised users to connect to the base station, thanks to its simple set-up utility and powerful access controls. AirPort Extreme works with Mac computers, PCs, iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, Apple TV and virtually all 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi wireless devices all at the same time.

Unbelievably simple to set-up. It gets a bit complicated if you are setting up from a PC, but with a mac or iPhone/iPad it is super easy. You just need to download the free app Airport Utility. My previous Dlink router had some compatibility issues with my Android phone, but everything went super smooth with the Apple router. I am not super tech savvy and don't really know how to customize all the different parameters and security settings on routers. This one was just plug and play. The signal is also pretty strong and is pretty good strength throughout my condo which is multi-level. All of my other devices - wireless photoframe, wireless printer, Xbox, Wii, PS3 works seamlessly.

I have set up lots of networks in my career, but stand amazed how easy this set up. Last week a window popped up on my computer and asked me if I wanted to update the firmware on my router. I said yes and it took over. 60-90 seconds later it was done. This is just so much better than the ilk from D-Link, Netgear, Belking and Linksys.

I replaced an old wireless router which was falling behind current standards. The AirPort Base Station was extremely easy to set up, worked immediately and eliminated all the glitches I'd been experiencing with the old hardware.

The latest AirPort Extreme Base Station is like its predecessors, just faster. Setup was effortless using AirPort Utility. The new base station (replacing an earlier generation AirPort Extreme) joined our wireless network with two other base stations right away and has been running for weeks with no issues. I love the simultaneous dual-band functionality. Now our smartphones (running on 2.4 GHz) don't slow down the network for our computers (running on 5 GHz).

Using this for 7 different computers and iPad 2, two iPhone 4, iPod Touch...
iPad 2 can utilize the 5GHz bandwidth and doesn't interfere with Microwave ovens.
I noticed that even with 2.4GHz connection, iPad 2 video streaming was much more robust when using the microwave oven than before (D-link DIR 655).
You have to download a small software from Apple, if you're using a Windoze machine like me to configure it (Airportsetup)

Big improvement on using iMac as a router. Instantly compatible with Windows and Kindle. Only negative is that it won't communicate with my older Brother laser and Epson ink jet printers. Oh well, nothing's perfect.

I don't have experience comparing routers back to back, but I have experienced some bad ones and this is certainly not one of them. It does its job, sets up effortlessly, and obviously looks great doing it. I am satisfied with this and would recommend it to anyone looking for a great home networking router.

The Airport Extreme shipped quickly and was up and running five minutes out of the box. Definitely superior to anything else out there. It functions flawlessly!
